The Medical Reserve Corps is comprised of a group of volunteers who have committed themselves to volunteering in a medical capacity to assist with making Jefferson County a safer and healthier community. The Medical Reserve Corps was established post September 2001. During 9/11 there was an overwhelming response of volunteers who wanted to assist at ground zero. Volunteers had to be turned away due to lack of staff and support to credential and train during that emergency. During a Presidential Speech early in 2002 President Bush urged Americans to volunteer. MRC was developed and established shortly there after. The primary goal was to train those personnel before the disaster and to integrate them into the overall emergency and response plans.
The Jefferson County Medical Reserve Corps was developed and established in 2007. At that time the goal was to primarily recruit medical professionals to volunteer. Currently we are strongly encouraging both medical and non medical volunteers to participate. The Jefferson County MRC has been active by participating in H1N1 vaccination clinics, health fairs, health and hygiene presentations at Jefferson County Schools, Flu Vaccination Clinics, public information booths at various events, promoting health and wellness and encouraging family preparedness. During a Public Health Emergency the MRC would be available to assist in surge capacity to local providers, and operating a POD for Mass Dispensing of vaccinations or other medications.
Currently we have a total of 24 active volunteers which include: Nurses, EMT’s, Firefighters, a Funeral Director, a Dental Hygienist, other public health and non medical volunteers. If you have interest in supporting your local community by volunteering, whether you are a medical or non medical volunteer please contact the Jefferson County Health Department at 785-863-2447.
